Virginia Hodge Brock

Polkton - Mrs. Virginia Hodge Brock, age 97, died Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Hospice House of Union County. Funeral services will be 3:00PM Sunday in the Polkton United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Griffin Cemetery. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00PM. Virginia was born and spent the early years of her life in Society Hill, SC, where she attended Saint Davids Academy. She was very active in youth activities and programs at historic Welch Neck Baptist Church, where she was exposed to the performing arts and literature and where she found her spiritual foundation. Society Hill and Welch Neck remained close to her heart throughout her life, and she returned often to reminisce and reconnect to those who had influenced her. At age 14, she moved with her family to McFarlan, NC, where she attended Morven High School and graduated from Zoar High School in 1937. That same year she met her husband, DeWitt Brock, at prayer meeting and they were married. The marriage lasted 71 years until his death in 2008. Virginia and DeWitt were the parents of six girls and one boy. In 1940 they moved to Polkton where for 40 years Virginia was a stalwart in the Baptist Church. She participated in many areas of service including teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, being a leader in the Womens Missionary Union, and organizing and teaching in vacation Bible School. For the remainder of her years, Virginia was an active member of Polkton Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught the adult Sunday school class up until a few years before her death. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, DeWitt; her father and mother, John Hodge and Caroline Braddock Hodge; her brothers, Robert and Johnny; sisters, Letha and Katie; and by many friends who were dear to her. Virginia was a devoted daughter, a life partner and understanding wife, an involved and loving parent and grandparent, and a good friend: one who was blessed with a kind spirit, an appreciation of beauty, an inherent wisdom and the courage to live her beliefs. Virginia had many interests. She loved music and reading. Although not known to many, she was a poet and writer; her depth of feeling was immense and touching to all who read her works. Because she loved to laugh, many of her poems and stories were humorous and made her laugh. She helped with many a school assignment. She was an accomplished seamstress finding pleasure in making her girls many beautiful clothes when they were young and continued to sew into her later years. She loved flowers and growing things and loved to arrange beautiful bouquets. She was a wonderful cook and prided herself on her pound cake and chocolate pie. Virginia was a dear person who was open to loving everyone and who influenced many. She remained mentally sharp and young at heart until the end. She is survived by her children, Carolyn Edwards (Don), Helen Munno (Frank), Wilma Drake, Marian Dennis (Jimmy), Frances Pope, Judy Sharpe (Larry), and Stanly Brock (Linda); 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She remained close to her nieces and nephews throughout her life. She loved her in-home helpers, Shirley Crowder, Dean Crowder, and Mary Gaddy. She had loved them since they were children and they shared her life over the past 10 years. Her neighbors and friends were dear to her heart. Virginia loved life and was an eternal optimist. She will be missed and loved always. The family wishes to thank all the health care professionals who provided care to her over her last weeks.
