Lilesville - Mr. Walter Alexander 'Buddy' Goodwin, 75, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be 11:00am Friday, October 6, 2017 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Teddy Lawson officiating. Interment will follow in Lilesville Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service on Friday and other times at the home of Mr. Goodwin's nephew and niece, Michael and Carla Freeman in Lilesville. Buddy was born August 4, 1942 in Anson County, NC a son of the late Joe Sharpe and Sadie Downer Goodwin. Buddy was saved while attending Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lilesville, NC. He also continuously expressed excitement for the ministry programs offered in our community at Lilesville Baptist and Olivet United Methodist Churches. He attended Lilesville High School prior to working for W. R. Bonsal. After leaving Bonsal, Mr. Goodwin worked as a building contractor. He, along with his wife, also owned and operated Goodwin's Rentals and Goodwin's Grocery Store. In his later years, Mr. Goodwin worked side by side with his brother in the forestry industry. Buddy enjoyed gardening, wood working, bird watching, hunting, fishing at the beach and locally on the Pee Dee River. Buddy was often found working in the Downer Family Cemetery and Savannah Methodist Church Cemetery just because he cared. Buddy and Martha loved supporting others by sharing food and sending cards during times of need. A favorite pastime for Buddy and Martha involved trips to the mountains and beaches of NC. He was very active in the lives of his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed visiting with his brothers and sisters. Surviving are his sisters and brothers, Beverly G. Freeman and Mike (Debbie) Goodwin both of Lilesville, Millie G. (Jerry) Burkett of Mt. Pleasant, Ellen G. (Freddy) Goodwin of Holden Beach, Donnie Goodwin of Rockingham; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ann Goodwin of Monroe; Mary Beverly Allen Hathcock of Cassatt, SC and Suzanne Allen (Wayne) LaBroad of Midland, John (Sue) Norris of Edenton, and Connie Norris (Travis) Williford of Fuquay-Varina. Surviving nephews and nieces along with their families are Jimmy (Terry), and Michael (Carla) Freeman, Janet (Tim) Clark, David (Laura) and Darryl Pennell, Gwen (James) Ratliff, Lyndia and Travis (Kristy) Goodwin, Delaine Fowler and Claudia Goodwin (Chip). His Allen Family nephews and nieces are Jeff Childs, Chris Childress, Shawn McStravick, Dustin Wrenn, Chelsa McLaughlin and Kristi Collins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 49 years, Martha Allen Goodwin, his sons, Walter Alexander 'Alex' Goodwin, Jr. and Eric Allen Goodwin, brother, Kress Goodwin, in-laws Beverly Allen, Mary Allen and Bud Norris, and brothers-in-law, James L. "Jim" Freeman, James David Norris, William 'Bill' Wrenn, and Ted Hathcock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lilesville Cemetery, % Lilesville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 452, Lilesville, NC 28091, Lilesville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 305, Lilesville, NC 28091 or Olivet United Methodist Church % Martha D. Goodwin, 3788 Stanback Ferry Road, Lilesville, NC 28091. .
