William Marvin Mr. Clark, Jr

Myrtle Beach, SC - Mr. William Marvin 'Marvelous Marv' Clark, Jr., 62, of Myrtle Beach and formerly of Lilesville, died Friday, November 27, 2015 at his home. Born February 14, 1953 to William Marvin Clark, Sr. and Katherine Loretta Tyson Clark of Lilesville, NC. Marv grew up in Anson County, NC, and began his radio career at the age of 14 working at WADE in Wadesboro, NC, filling in on weekends. Shortly after showing charisma and personality, he began working for WLWL in Rockingham, NC. From 1973 to 1976, Marv enlisted in the U.S. Army where he worked for the armed forces radio, based in Anchorage, AK. As a graduate of the Defense Information College in Indianapolis, he served in the U.S. Army's 'Arctic Special Forces.' While stationed there, his duties ranged from announcing for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network at Elmendorf Air Force Base, to working as a photo journalist for the Fort Richardson Post newspaper. Upon returning from his service with the U.S. Army, he returned to WLWL radio station before accepting a position at WPDZ (Z-103) in Cheraw, SC. While at WPDZ, Marv was instrumental in collecting Christmas cards and messages of hope to send to the 52 US hostages being held captive in Iran as well as a story about a local family's Christmas miracle, which made national news. Marv used the airwaves to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for numerous families and charities throughout his career. While working at WKZQ in the 1980's, he helped raise over $100,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and personally presented checks on two occasions to Jerry Lewis. In order to accomplish this, he participated in the 7-11 'Roof-a-thon' fundraising event where he actually lived on the roof of a 7-11 store for a total of 17 days and nights. During the MDA fundraiser, South Carolina Senior Senator Strom Thurmond stopped by and was lifted to Marv's perch aboard a 'cherry picker' to congratulate him for his efforts. Marv extended his charity work across the U.S. into the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1990's. While at KSSK radio in Honolulu, HI, he raised nearly $7,000 for 'Toys for Tots' by making his first ever sky dive live on the air. Following his 13,000 ft. freefall, he presented a check to a representative from Kaneohe Marine Corp. During Operation Desert Shield, he traveled to the Persian Gulf to record holiday greetings for U.S. soldiers to bring back home to their families. In 1993, he returned to the east coast and eventually settled back down in Myrtle Beach. He worked with WKZQ again before accepting a morning show position working alongside Bobbi Jones and Holli Heart at Gator 107.9. While at Gator, he and his co-hosts were involved in additional charities such as disaster relief for tornado victims in Arkansas. He also worked as an emcee at The Palace Theater for several years. He spent the last few years working in sales and training mostly with Bluegreen Resorts and Holiday Inn Vacations. Marv was an incredibly motivating individual who shared his heart with everyone he met. He always had a story and a smile to share. From songwriter to teacher, Marv was a beloved husband, father, mentor and friend, blessed with a voice and heart of gold. Marv is survived by his wife, Ida A.D. Clark; his son, William 'Cody' Tyson Clark; his daughter, Kimberly Ann Clark; his father, William Marvin Clark Sr.; his brothers, Charles Timothy Clark and wife, Janet, Alan Ray Clark and wife, Gaye; his grandchildren, Rachael Leigh Day and Christopher Alan Day, and longtime family friend 'Sister' Debbie Terry Baker.
