MONROE Mr. William Lloyd Ratliff, 81, of Monroe, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Hospice House of Union County. He was born June 15, 1937 in Anson County to the late William Parsons and Ruth Johnson Ratliff.
Mr. Ratliff graduated from Morven High School in 1955. He then attended Pfeiffer University where he received his undergraduate degree in 1959. He continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his Master of Education in 1963.
He served as principal of East Elementary School, John D. Hodges Elementary School, Walter Bickett Elementary School and retired as the principal of Monroe High School. While working as principal he also completed his Advanced Master of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. He received the Monroe Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator Award in 1967 and the Monroe City Schools Outstanding Administrator of the Year Award in 1987.
Mr. Ratliff was an active member of Central United Methodist Church where he received the United Methodist Laity of the Year Award in 1999. He was also active in the Monroe Civitan Club where he received Civitan of the Year in 1993.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Huntley Ratliff, children; Christine Ratliff Poythress and husband Kevin; William Lloyd Ratliff Jr. (Brother) and wife Kristy; grandchildren; Nolan Clinton Poythress, Lauren Neal Poythress, Karson Leigh Mendenhall and husband Dalton, and William Lloyd Ratliff III (Trey).
In addition to his parents, his sister, Lynne Ratliff Smith preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 2nd from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in Central Hall at Central United Methodist Church. A memorial service will begin in the sanctuary at 2:00pm.
There will be a private inurnment in Morven Cemetery, where Lloyds parents and sister were laid to rest.
