He is survived by his loving wife, Bettye Braswell Wall and two sons, William Battle Wall, III (Kaye) of Charlotte, NC and Arthur Clyde Wall of Wadesboro, NC; five step-children, David Braswell and Dr. Laura Braswell both of Atlanta, GA, Robert Braswell (Victoria) of Hickory, NC, Anne Heldreth (Steve) of Charlottesville, VA and John Braswell of Hendersonville,NC; eight grandchildren, Kemp Battle Wall (Lauren) of Charlotte, NC and Kathryn Kristy Wall of London, England, Matthew Braswell of Charlottesville, VA, Alaina Braswell of Los Angeles, CA, Emily Braswell of Hickory, NC, Sarah Heldreth of Charlottesville, VA, Nathaniel Heldreth of Colorado Springs, CO and DeFord Smith of Atlanta, GA; two great-grandchildren, Battle Watson Wall and Margaret Elizabeth Wall son and daughter of Kemp Battle Wall and Lauren; and one sister, Bettie Elaine Davidson (Clyde) of Rockingham, NC.
Battle served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, stationed in Quonset Point, RI, aboard the USS Lyon as a Petty Officer First Class and participated in the European/African/Middle Eastern/Asiatic and Pacific Campaigns. Over the years he enjoyed attending reunions of his USS Lyon crewmates and officers held in various locations across the United States. Following his return from the war and his proud service to his country he reengaged with the family farm and began a career in lumber and timber. After retiring, he and his wife, Bettye lived in Hendersonville, NC and Longboat Key, FL before locating to Pinehurst, NC in 2005.
Battle loved dearly the Pee Dee River Valley which flows through Anson and Richmond Counties, NC and ran deeply in Battle's roots. He was born and raised there and made his living from the region's lumber and timber. He enjoyed fully his last eight years upon returning from Longboat Key, FL to reside in Pinehurst.
He enjoyed frequent 'pickup' truck excursions from Pinehurst to the back roads of Anson County, stopping here and there to see and talk to relatives and friends. On occasion, a son or his grandson, Nat might accompany him to be enlightened with experiences of the past. Battle dealt in forestry endeavors up until his final days.
