Wadesboro - Mr. William Clayton Webb, Jr., 84, formerly of Lilesville, died July 13, 2016, at his home in Anson County. He was born in Anson County, a son of the late William Clayton Webb, Sr. and Mamie Gulledge Webb.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Saturday in the Deep Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Teddy Lawson and Dr. James Ritter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday at Leavitt Funeral Home.
After graduating as valedictorian of his class, William enrolled at NC State College, graduating in 1954. He immediately entered the U. S. Army and served honorably, being discharged in 1956 at Fort Polk, LA. While there, he met his future wife, Blanche Switzer, and they were married on August 4, 1956. After his discharge from the Army they made their home in Lilesville, NC, where he began his teaching career. He taught in Anson County Schools for 37 years, retiring in 1993. During the summers he kept the school shop open to assist the community with farm equipment repairs. While living in Lilesville, he was an active member of Lilesville Baptist Church and in community affairs, serving on occasion as town mayor and for 30 years on the Lilesville VFD. As a life-long Anson County resident, William touched many lives, including former students and many friends.
After the death of his parents, William and Blanche moved to the Webb home site in the Deep Creek community, residing there at the time of his death. He and Blanche were active members of Deep Creek Baptist Church.
In addition to his beloved wife of almost 60 years, William is survived by: four children, Billy Webb (Barbara) of Wadesboro, Sharon Belcher (John) and Jimmy Webb both of Lilesville, Frank Webb (Karen) of Norwood; nine grandchildren, Clayton Belcher, Jamie Webb (Courtney), Jessica Webb, Kourtnie Harward (J.F.), Rebekah Webb, Kathryn Webb, Luke Webb, Sean Belcher and Sara Eldridge; and one great-grandchild, Caleb Webb.
Also surviving is a sister, Ann Webb Ballard (Sam) of Hamlet; and a brother, Jimmy Webb (Anita) of Indian Trail.
